Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Ltd.'s Volvo Cars unit confirms it has begun shipping Chinese-made S60L small sport sedans to the U.S.

The $34,000 cars, which are assembled in Chengdu, will begin arriving in late July. Last year the plant made about 35,000 XC crossover vehicles and gasoline and plug-in hybrid versions of the S60L, according to Volvo.

The S60L has a wheelbase about 3.5 inches longer than the standard Swedish-built S60. The high-end version it is sending to the U.S. is called the S60 Inscription in China. Volvo has not indicated how many cars it plans to export.

Last week the company confirmed it will build a $500 million factory in the U.S. with capacity to make 100,000 cars per year. The facility is expected to begin making several unspecified models in 2018.
