Dubbed the T3, the turbocharged 1.5-liter mill makes 156 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. Maximum torque is available from 1,850 rpm to 3,850 rpm.
Initially, the engine will be mated with a 6-speed manual transmission in the XC40. An 8-speed automatic option will be added later.
Volvo says the XC40 T3 with the manual transmission is rated at 38 mpg on the European driving cycle. Zero-to-62-mph is listed at 9.4 seconds.
The XC40 also is available in Europe with 2.0-liter 4-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines. The gasoline 4-banger currently is the only engine offered in the U.S.
