General Motors Co. said earlier this week that it would extend by one week the summer shutdown of the Hamtramck, Mich., factory that builds the $39,000 Chevrolet Volt extended-range sedan to avoid excess inventory.

But on Wednesday the company announced it would add a week to this month's production schedule for the Volt because of strong sales last month. GM will end the current work suspension at the Hamtramck plant on April 16 instead of April 23. The company hasn't said whether it will restore the extra week of production in July.

Volt sales jumped to nearly 2,300 units in March from slightly more than 1,000 units in February. The model's previous best sales month was December, when volume topped 1,500 cars. GM now aims to sell more than 3,000 Volts per month later this spring, CEO Dan Akerson tells Bloomberg Radio.
