Vietnam's transport minister tells Thanh Nien News he has asked his agency to consider amending government regulations to enable Uber Technologies Inc. to continue operating its online carsharing service in the country.
San Francisco-based Uber began operations in Vietnam at the end of July.
The surprise announcement from Dinh La Thang on Tuesday came a day after his deputy Nguyen Hong Truong told reporters the taxi service was illegal. But Thang counters that "laws and regulations should be amended for the sake of the public interest."
Thang's position contrasts sharply with Uber's reception elsewhere in southeast Asia. Bloomberg News notes that Thailand, for one, is fining the owners of private cars who provide Uber rider and warning consumers not to use the Uber smartphone app.
The service faces dozens of similar rejections around the world, usually because Uber doesn't use licensed taxi drivers and vehicles.
