A conservative group has sued the U.S. Dept. of Commerce to release its February report to the White House about the security threat of foreign cars.
The analysis, a so-called “section 232” investigation, is widely believed to provide justification to tax foreign-built cars on the grounds that their sale in the U.S. results in a smaller and less technically advanced domestic production base.
Observers note that keeping details of the auto analysis secret prevents independent analysis and gives Trump greater leverage in forcing concessions from countries that export large numbers of cars to the U.S.
President Donald Trump used the same argument last year to justify imposing import duties of 25% and 10%, respectively, on steel and aluminum. The new lawsuit was filed with the District of Columbia Federal Court by Cause for Action, a non-profit group backed by conservative political activists Charles and David Koch.
