The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into complaints about power-assisted tailgates of heavy-duty Ford F-Series pickup trucks opening unexpectedly when the vehicle is moving.
The probe targets 54,400 of Ford’s 2017 model F-250 and F-350 Super Duty pickups. The problem could allow a truck to dump the unsecured contents of its load bed, posing a hazard to other traffic. The agency will determine whether the problem is a significant safety risk that warrants a recall.
Ford issued a service bulletin a year ago indicating the problem is caused by water leaking into the power tailgate system’s wiring harness.
