The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened a preliminary investigation into complaints that the throttle may jam in an open position in 2002-2003 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable sedans.

The probe involves an estimated 310,000 models equipped with Ford's four-valve, 3.0-liter V-6 Duratec engine. NHTSA reports 50 complaints about the problem. The agency says the issue does not affect newer models or 2002-2003 cars fitted with Ford's two-valve, 3.0-liter V-6 Vulcan engine.

NHTSA says the engine's throttle control cable attachment collar can fracture. If that happens, a ferrule on the cable could jam the throttle at a 26% open position.
