The U.S. Dept. of Justice has asked that Kobe Steel Ltd. supply technical details about potentially subpar materials and products the Japanese company sold to U.S. customers.
The request follows Kobe’s admission a week ago that its factories in several countries falsified performance specs for products it supplied to some 500 companies worldwide. Among the recipients of the questionable materials are Boeing, General Motors, Ford and Tesla.
Legal experts speculate that the Justice Dept. is considering whether Kobe is guilty of fraud under U.S. law for falsifying product information about its materials.
No injuries have been linked to the growing list of below-spec steel, iron, copper and aluminum products involved. But the scandal has prompted Kobe customers to assess whether the fraudulent materials pose a safety hazard.
