U.S. Consumer Prices Rise 0.3%

The Consumer Price Index climbed 0.3% in December, bringing the full-year increase to an unadjusted 1.5%, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Higher energy costs were the major driver in last month's increase, jumping 2.1% in December after declining 1.7% in October and 1% in November.

New-vehicle costs were flat last month but up 0.4% for the full year. Gasoline prices surged 3.1% in December, but full-year prices declined 1% from 2012. The BLS says electricity prices rose 3.2% last year, more than any other sector.

The core CPI, which excludes volatile energy and housing prices, rose 0.1% in December and 1.7% for the year.
