Consumer confidence in the American economy, which slipped last month, improved in March, led by a strong upturn in optimism about conditions in coming months, the New York City-based Conference Board reports.

The research group's overall consumer confidence index advanced to 82.3 from 78.3 in February.

The board says consumers are moderately more upbeat about job prospects and the overall economy but less optimistic about improving their incomes. About 23% of consumers consider the current business climate "good" the same proportion who describe it as "bad." Some 14% expect more jobs this summer, and 18% predict fewer jobs.
