Carmakers have recalled a record 60.5 million vehicles in the U.S. this year, thanks to huge recalls of flawed General Motors Co. ignition switches and defective airbag inflators from Takata Corp., Bloomberg News estimates.

The previous record year was 2004, when 30.8 million vehicles were called back for repairs.

GM alone accounted for more than 26 million of the total for 2014, with 10 recalls involving more than 1 million units each. Takata's faulty airbag inflators have triggered at least 7.4 million vehicles by 10 carmakers in the U.S., and those campaigns continue to expand.
