Carmakers recalled more than 60 million vehicles in the U.S. last year, double the previous record.

But that volume "probably" will be surpassed in 2015 because of rising public attention on quality defects, says Mark Rosekind, the new head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Rosekind notes the agency received more than 75,000 complaints about safety problems from consumers last year, nearly double the total in 2013. He vows NHTSA will improve its ability to track potential defects and push carmakers to respond faster to fix them.
