Volkswagen AG is giving its Passat midsize sedan an exterior and interior makeover as well as adding a host of advanced safety systems. The company unveiled the facelifted 2016 U.S. model at an event yesterday in Brooklyn, N.Y.
The new models uses the previous model's roof, doors and body side stamping. But they sport a new front end, which gets a redesigned grille with three chromed slats, narrow LED headlights, new fenders and bumpers, and a more sculpted hood. The rear of the new Passat gets a restyled trunk, additional chrome trim and optional LED taillights.
A new top-end R-Line variant adds a sportier front bumper, unique side skirts and a rear diffuser. It rides on 19-inch alloy wheels shod with ZR-rated Continental tires.
The Passat's interior sports a new instrument panel, redesigned steering wheel and higher quality materials. VW's second-generation modular infotainment system is standard with an optional capacitive touchscreen that allows smartphone-like controls, such as swiping and pinch-zooming. The system also supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity. Heated rear seats are optional.
Available safety and convenience features include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning and autonomous emergency braking, blind spot monitor with rear traffic alert, lane departure warning and automated parking assist functionality. A rearview camera is standard.
Buyers in the U.S. can choose between a turbocharged 1.8-liter 4-banger and a 3.6-liter V-6. Plans to offer a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder are on hold pending the outcome of VW's rapidly expanding diesel emission cheating scandal. VW has admitted rigging emission tests and has suspended sales of remaining stocks of 2015 cars equipped with the 4-cylinder oil burner.
Sales of the 2016 Passat with gasoline engines will begin later this year. Pricing will start at $22,440, which is unchanged from last year's base model.

Honda Re-Imagines and Re-Engineers the Ridgeline
When Honda announced the first-generation Ridgeline in 2005, it opened the press release describing the vehicle: “The Honda Ridgeline re-defines what a truck can be with its true half-ton bed payload capability, an interior similar to a full-size truck and the exterior length of a compact truck.” And all that said, people simply couldn’t get over the way there is a diagonal piece, a sail-shaped buttress, between the cab and the box.
