Toyota Motor Corp. is preparing a global recall of 295,100 trucks and crossovers with emergency braking systems that could stop working unexpectedly.
The campaign affects 2012 model Toyota RAV4 small crossovers, 2012-2013 model Toyota Tacoma pickup trucks and 2012-2013 Lexus RX 350 midsize crossovers. About 261,100 of the vehicles are in the U.S.
The problem involves a terminal that connects the skid control system's control computer and the brake actuator motor, which adjusts hydraulic pressure to each wheel's brake cylinder. Toyota says the connection could oxidize, thus increasing electrical resistance.
If the resistance gets too high, the vehicle's stability control, antilock brakes and traction control functions could be disabled. Under such conditions, standard braking function would remain unchanged, but system warning lights would be illuminated on the instrument panel.
Toyota, which has not yet scheduled a recall, proposes to fix the flaw with a dealer-installed software update.
