The British government and private industry have agreed to each invest 3.5 million ($5.6 million) to add as many as seven public-access hydrogen refueling stations in the U.K.
The government will spend another 2 million ($3.2 million) to make eight existing private-access facilities available to the public for refueling fuel-cell-powered vehicles.
The program will currently support only 10 fuel-cell cars, several London taxis and eight buses in the U.K., according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.
But Hyundai Motor Co. plans to deliver the first six of its ix35 fuel-cell cars in the U.K. this month. Toyota will begin limited retail sales of its hydrogen-fueled car in the U.K. next summer. Analysts say that, as with electric cars, demand for hydrogen cars will be dictated by the number of fueling stations available.
