The U.K.'s Dept. for Transport has agreed to allow self-driving cars to be tested on public roads beginning this summer. The department expects to finalize operating rules for such vehicles by spring.
The department's review and decision aim to ensure the U.K. will be a global leader in advanced mobility R&D.
The Transport Dept. says test vehicles must include a driver who can take control of the vehicle if necessary. Otherwise, it says, testers won't need to obtain special certificates or permits, and they won't be required to post a surety bond for test vehicles.
The department also vows to help amend European and international regulations governing driverless cars by the end of 2018.
