Uber Technologies Inc. has more of its independent black cars operating in New York City than the number of traditional yellow taxis there, BBC News reports.

BBC cites the New York Taxi and Limousine Commission, which says there are about 14,100 Uber cars and 13,600 taxies on the city's streets.

But the commission notes that the ride-hailing service's cars complete far fewer passenger deliveries because many of Uber's drivers work only part time.

Unlike UberX drivers, the company's black-car drivers are licensed chauffeurs. But a group that represents taxi and Uber drivers in the city complains that an unlimited number of Uber operators means no drivers can "earn a decent living."
