Gary Casteel confirms he won’t seek reelection after all as secretary-treasurer of the United Auto Workers union this summer.
Casteel, 60, plans instead to retire when his four-year term ends in mid-June. He had been considered a shoo-in for another four-year term as secretary-treasurer.
Casteel’s impending departure adds to a significant overhaul of the UAW’s senior management that began last year. Jimmy Settles, a vice president who heads the union’s Ford department, announced earlier this year that he also will retire in June.
In December Norwood Jewell abruptly quit as vice president of the union’s Fiat Chrysler department. His departure came after federal investigators searched his home as part of their probe into corruption involving a joint FCA-UAW employee training center. Last month Nancy Johnson, the second in command of the FCA department, was charged in the corruption scandal.
