As expected, United Auto Workers union leaders on Friday approved a new, tentative labor agreement with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV. The measure now goes to the UAW's 40,000 Chrysler workers for ratification.
The new pact replaces an earlier proposal rejected 2:1 by the workers a week ago. If accepted, the deal would narrow the pay rate differences in Chrysler's current two-tier wage scheme to $1 per hour over four years. The remaining gap would be erased within another four years.
The new proposal also shelves a plan to form a healthcare co-op covering union workers at General Motors, Ford and Chrysler.
