The United Auto Workers union tells reporters it is mulling a “Buy American” ad campaign to promote the sale of union-made cars in the U.S.
UAW President Dennis Williams says the union was inspired in part by the support for Donald Trump’s “America First” philosophy, a sentiment he says has been building across the country since the Great Recession eight years ago.
Opining that the U.S. economy has been “reckless in trade,” Williams says it’s time for consumers to exercise their purchasing power. “If it’s not made in America, don’t buy it,” he declares. Williams indicates the UAW ads could support the purchase of cars made in the U.S. by non-union workers.
Williams also praises President Trump’s vow to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement to keep more jobs in the U.S. He says the UAW intends to contact the Trump administration and present its views about such talks.
