The leadership of the United Auto Workers union has nominated Gary Jones to become the union’s next president.
Jones, 60, has led UAW Region 5, which represents 17 states from Missouri to Hawaii, since 2012. He joined the union in 1975 and is a certified public accountant. He is a past member of the UAW’s international staff, chief accountant and aide to two secretary-treasurers.
The UAW will conduct a formal vote to confirm Jones during its national convention in June. He will succeed Dennis Williams, who is prohibited by union policy from running for re-election because he will be 65 years old by then.
Union members also will vote on replacements for two vice presidents who are retiring: Ford department head Jimmy Settles and Fiat Chrysler department chief Norwood Jewell.
