The United Auto Workers union says it has filed an unfair labor practice charge against Tesla Inc. on behalf of about 400 hourly and salaried employees it claims were unfairly terminated earlier this month.
The union’s complaint with the National Labor Relations Board comes two months after the NLRB agreed there is some merit in worker complaints about Tesla’s labor practices.
The UAW claims Tesla intimidated and harassed pro-union employees, disciplined or dismissed workers for wearing items emblazoned with the UAW logo and has discouraged employees from participating in the union’s informational activities. The UAW cites workers—including union advocate Richard Ortiz—who say they were terminated for having a “negative influence” on employees.
In February the UAW announced it would like to organize the hourly workers at Tesla’s assembly plant in Fremont, Calif. Tesla insists it dismissed the 400 employees as a result of routine performance reviews and denied the firings were motivated by an aversion to unionization.
