Volkswagen AG plans to add two small crossovers to its lineup in the next few years, according to Handelsblatt, which cites unidentified company sources.

The company currently offers two larger crossovers: the midsize Touareg and compact Tiguan. The German newspaper says one of the two new models will share its platform with the VW Polo small car, and the second will ride on the even smaller chassis that carries the company's new Up! city car.

VW says it has made no decision about either model, but the newspaper insists that both vehicles are "certain" to go into production. It notes that VW's topless Up-based Buggy concept was well received when it was unveiled at the Frankfurt auto show last September.

Handelsblatt predicts the Up-based model will be priced in Europe well under €20,000 ($26,000).
