Turbocharged Skyactiv Engine Revs Up Mazda CX-9

Mazda Motor Corp. took the wraps off the production version of its new CX-9 midsize crossover vehicle this week at the Los Angeles auto show. The second-generation model, which will arrive in dealerships next spring, features a more upscale design and Mazda’s first turbocharged Skyactiv engine.
The all-new CX-9 rides on Mazda’s Skyactiv chassis. Although its overall length is slightly shorter than its predecessor, the 2017 model’s wheelbase is 2.2 inches longer to provide more cabin room.
The turbocharged 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine makes 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque when running on regular gasoline. Switching to high-octane gas ups the engine’s output to 250 hp. The naturally aspirated version of the Skyactiv four-banger, which powers the Mazda6 sedan, generates 180 hp and 189 lb-ft of torque.
Mazda says the turbocharged engine is the first in the industry that can vary exhaust pulsation based on engine speed to optimize air flow and minimize turbo lag. The system regulates air volume via a series of valves between the exhaust valves and the turbine. At low speeds, the turbocharger gets less air to better control exhaust pulses and maximize turbine efficiency. At higher speeds, all ports open for maximum air flow.
The engine also features an exhaust gas recirculation system and a 10.5:1 compression ratio, which Mazda says is one of the highest in the industry for a similar-sized engine capable of running on regular gasoline. The engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Mazda expects a 20% increase in fuel economy over the current CX-9, which is powered by a 273-hp 3.7-liter V-6 engine. That model has a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency fuel economy rating of 19 mpg in front-wheel-drive configurations and 18 mpg for all-wheel-drive.
The combination of adownsized engine and lightweight Skyactiv chassis saves about 200 lbs for fwd models and nearly 300 lbs on awd units.
The CX-9’s new face features a large chrome grille and slim light-emitting-diode headlights. Other design highlights include a stretched hood, rounded fenders, a dual-exhaust system and a tailgate-mounted spoiler.
The three-row interior is fitted with high-quality materials, including an aluminum-trimmed dashboard and rosewood trim panels supplied by Japanese guitar-maker Fujigen. The CX-9 also gets redesigned front seats, LED accent lighting and a Mazda Connect infotainment system. Thicker windows and 53 lbs of sound-deadening materials help keep noise out. An upgraded instrument cluster with a 4.6-inch TFT display is optional.
