TRW Automotive Holdings Corp. has introduced a new design for seatbelt latches that is about 20% smaller and 15% lighter than the current design.
The slimmer RNS5 buckle resembles the current system on the outside but features a simpler internal design. TRW says the new latch's standardized components make it easier to adapt to local markets.
The company notes the RNS5 can be produced using automated or semi-automated manufacturing techniques. TRW began making the new buckle in Europe earlier this year.
