President Donald Trump says he will nominate Andrew Wheeler, acting head of the Environmental Protection Agency, to take over as the group’s permanent administrator.
Wheeler has been filling in at EPA since his predecessor, Scott Pruitt, was ousted in July. His nomination must be approved by the Senate.
Unlike Pruitt, Wheeler has shunned the public eye and is considered an environmental policy wonk. A former lobbyist for the coal industry, he is expected to continue the Trump administration’s push to ease what it considers ineffective regulations that overly burden business. But observers note he also has been more conciliatory than his predecessor about deregulation.
