President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt to be administrator for what he has described as an “out-of-control” Environmental Protection Agency.
Pruitt, who has close ties to the fossil fuel industry, is a strong opponent of the Obama administration’s aggressive efforts to address climate change. He also has challenged the agency’s power to set emission limits for carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas whose output by internal combustion engines is directly linked to their fuel consumption.
Trump pledged during his campaign to “get rid of [the agency] in almost every form.” In nominating Pruitt this week, he said EPA under the Obama administration has pursued an “anti-energy” agenda that “destroyed million of jobs” and undermined farming and other industries. Pruitt will reverse that policy and “restore EPA’s essential mission of keeping our air and our water clean and safe,” Trump adds.
