Japan has won the unanimous approval of the 11 members of the Trans-Pacific Partnership to participate in the group's free trade negotiations.
Japan's breakthrough was an agreement with the U.S. in mid-April.
Tokyo isn't likely to join the talks until late July. Its admittance must be formally endorsed by lawmakers in at least some of the member countries, including the U.S.
TPP members say that trade matters already resolved will not be reopened. The group has said it aims to complete an agreement this year.
