Toyota’s Advanced Safety Package Tops 10 Million Units
Toyota Motor Corp. says it has sold more than 10 million vehicles worldwide that are equipped with the carmaker’s Safety Sense package.

Toyota Motor Corp. says it has sold more than 10 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles worldwide equipped with the carmaker’s Safety Sense package since its introduction in March 2015.
The base system includes a pre-collision alerts and actuation, lane-departure warning and automatic high beams. Higher-level versions add adaptive cruise control and other features.
Toyota estimates the package has cut rear-end collisions by as much as 70% in Japan on vehicles equipped with the technology. Such accidents can be reduced by 90% when Safety Sense is combined with Toyota’s Intelligent Clearance Sonar technology to mitigate low-speed collisions, according to the carmaker.
Toyota currently offers Safety Sense in 68 countries and expects to increase availability to 100 countries by 2020. The system is installed in about 90% of new Toyota and Lexus vehicles sold in Europe, Japan and the U.S.
The second-generation Safety Sense introduced in January boasts improved detection and performance, including mitigation of nighttime accidents involving pedestrians and bicyclists. Further development is focusing on doing the same for head-on collisions.
