Toyota Motor Corp. has developed a prototype Prius hybrid with a flex-fuel engine that can run on gasoline or ethanol.

Toyota, which unveiled the car in Sao Paulo, is targeting the Brazilian market. The company standard Prius has been a slow seller in the country. But Toyota believes that enabling the car to burn ethanol, a plentiful fuel in Brazil, could boost the Prius’ appeal.

The company is positioning the flex-fuel hybrid as a better option than all-electric vehicles in countries that lack an EV charging infrastructure, The Nikkei reports.

The carmaker also points out that the Prius concept’s ability to operate in all-electric mode helps deliver greater range when the car is using ethanol, a less efficient fuel than gasoline. Toyota says it will use the prototype hybrid to collect real-world performance and powertrain durability data before putting the car into production.
