Toyota Motor Corp. says it will use next week’s Beijing auto show to debut two plug-in hybrid models for the Chinese market.
The plug-ins are an initial response to China’s law that in 2019 will require at least 10% of a carmaker’s sales in the country be so-called “new-energy” vehicles. The sales target, which doesn’t count simple hybrid powertrains, will rise to 12% in 2020. By then, China aims to have 5 million such vehicles on the road.
Toyota has said it intends to hike its annual sales of electrified vehicles to 5.5 million units worldwide by 2030.
