Toyota Motor Corp. plans to unveil the Hybrid-R sports car concept at the Frankfurt auto show next month.

The car will use the same Toyota Hybrid System-Racing (THS-R) hybrid technology found in the company's TS030 FIA World Endurance Championship racer. That car, whose 3.4-liter V-8 engine and electric hybrid motor deliver a combined 830 hp, finished second at the 24 Hours of Le Mans earlier this summer.

Observers speculate that the concept might foreshadow a new hybrid sports car to succeed the Toyota Supra, the company's flagship sport coupe produced in the 1980s and 1990s.

It isn't clear whether the concept is related to plans announced earlier by Toyota and BMW to jointly develop a sports car platform by the end of this year.
