Toyota to Repeat Takata Airbag Recall in Japan

Toyota Motor Corp. is again recalling 1.6 million vehicles in Japan to replace airbag inflators made by Takata Corp. that could explode when triggered, Bloomberg News reports.
The campaign, which covers 22 models, repeats an earlier effort to identify high-priority repairs by testing the sealed inflators for air leaks. Toyota intends to reexamine the vehicles after a Takata inflator in a Nissan Motor Co. vehicle exploded even after passing a leak test.
Toyota said in July it is recalling some 12 million vehicles worldwide to replace Takata inflators. Eleven other carmakers have launched campaigns to fix roughly 28 million more vehicles with the same problem.
The exact cause of the inflator failures remains unclear. But their propellant appears to be sensitive to prolonged exposure to high levels of heat and humidity.
