Toyota Motor Corp. says it will recall 6.5 million vehicles worldwide that were fitted with power window switches that could overheat and cause a fire.
The campaign will cover vehicles made between 2007 and 2012 in Japan and elsewhere. Affected models are the Yariz/Vitz small car, Corolla and Camry sedans, Matrix five-door hatch, RAV4 crossover, Highlander and Sequoia SUVs and Tundra large pickup truck.
The callback expands on a recall in 2012 that involved more than 7.4 million vehicles to fix a similar problem in the same models.
Toyota says the biggest concentrations of affected vehicles in the new campaign are in North America (2.7 million), Europe (1.2 million) and Japan (600,000).
The company blames the problem on an insufficient application of grease on the switch’s electrical contact points. Dealers will apply more grease and, if necessary, replace a circuit board.
