Toyota Motor Corp. will use its upcoming Supra sports coupe in future NASCAR races, according to multiple media reports.

The Supra could debut in the second-tier Xfinity series as early as next year and eventually move up to the top Monster Energy Cup series, sources tell Sports Business Journal. Toyota declined to comment.

Toyota has raced the Camry sedan in both series since it began providing cars to NASCAR teams in 2007. The carmaker, which plans to launch the all-new Supra next year, unveiled the GR Supra Racing Concept (pictured) in March at the Geneva auto show.

If the reports are true, Toyota would join Ford and General Motors in switching their NASCAR rides to sports cars. GM began using the Chevrolet Camaro this year, and Ford will replace the Fusion sedan with the Mustang next year.

Toyota is developing the Supra’s rear-wheel-drive platform with BMW, which will use the architecture for a new Z4 roadster. The NASCAR variant of the Supra likely would be powered by a V-8 engine mated with a 4-speed manual transmission.
