Toyota Motors Corp.'s redesigned RAV4 small crossover is shorter, lower, wider and lighter than its predecessor.

The 2013 vehicle also drops two slow-selling options from the current model: a V-6 engine and a third row of seats.

This year's 2.4-liter, 176-hp four-cylinder engine will be the only powerplant offered. A new six-speed automatic replaces the current four-speed unit, helping to boost the front-drive RAV4's U.S. fuel economy ratings to 24 mpg city and 31 mpg highway from 22 mpg/28 mpg for the 2012 model.

The new model sports a more streamlined exterior with undertrays and vortex generators at the base of the A-pillar and in the taillight covers to improve aerodynamics. An under-floor spare tire allows the vehicle to have a conventional roof-hinged rear door for the first time since the RAV4 debuted 16 years ago.

Standard features include 17-inch wheels, privacy glass, eight airbags, slimmer front-row seatbacks that improve rear-seat knee room, a 6.1-inch touchscreen display and a backup camera. Among the options are a voice recognition audio system, blind spot and rear cross-traffic monitors and a power liftgate.
