Toyota Motor Corp. says it will recall 2.77 million vehicles worldwide to repair steering and water pump defects.
In the U.S., the campaign involves 670,000 Prius hybrid sedans from the 2004-2009 model years but no other models. All the cars being recalled have a defective steering gearbox link that could fail. About 350,000 of them also have a faulty hybrid system cooling pump.
The recall comes a month after Toyota announced a global recall of 7.4 million vehicles its largest ever for a single defective part to fix power window switches that could cause a fire.
Outside the U.S. the steering shaft recall involves 10 models, including the Prius and encompasses 1.5 million vehicles in Japan, 496,000 in Europe and 104,000 in other markets. The hybrid water pump recall includes 175,000 vehicles sold in Japan, 83,000 in Europe and 22,000 elsewhere.
