Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling some 2.9 million cars in markets outside the U.S. to replace explosion-prone Takata Corp. airbag inflators.
Like current callbacks in the U.S., the campaigns target Takata inflators that were made without a drying agent that can help stabilize the device’s propellant. Without the additive, the propellant can decompose after prolonged exposure to heat and humidity. Takata inflators have been blamed for most of the 16 fatalities reported worldwide in which a Takata inflator misfired.
Reuters says the recalls include about 750,000 vehicles in Japan and nearly 1.2 million in the Middle East, Oceania and assorted small markets. Much of the remaining campaigns are in Europe.
