Toyota Motor Corp. plans to recall about 690,000 Tacoma midsize pickup trucks in the U.S. to replace rear leaf springs that could fracture, puncture the fuel tank and cause a fire.

The campaign covers 2005-2011 Tacoma 4 4 and Pre-Runner models. Toyota says it is not aware of any crashes or injuries caused by the defect, in which one of the three or four leaf springs could fracture due to stress and corrosion.

Toyota says a fractured spring, if not replaced, could eventually move out of position and contact surrounding structures, including the fuel tank.
