A software glitch has prompted Toyota Motor Corp. to recall all 1.9 million of its third-generation Prius hybrids worldwide. The campaign covers roughly half the Prius cars ever made.
The recall includes about 997,000 vehicles in Japan, 713,000 in North America and 130,000 in Europe. The cars were produced between 2009 and 2014, according to the company.
Toyota says a flaw in the control software for the motor/generator and hybrid powertrain could allow transistors within the boost converter to overheat and stop working. If that happens, the car could enter a limp-home mode or even shut down entirely while being driven.
The company reports nearly 800 cases of the problem worldwide but says there have been no crashes.
