Toyota Recalling 320,400 Vehicles with Airbags That Could Misfire

Toyota Motor Corp. is preparing a recall of 320,400 trucks and SUVs in the U.S. to replace side curtain airbag systems that could deploy when they shouldn’t.
The callback targets Toyota brand 2003-2006 model Land Cruiser SUVs, 2004-2006 model 4Runner SUVs and 2005-2006 model Tundra pickup trucks and Sequoia SUVs. The campaign also includes Lexus brand 2003-2006 model LX 470 SUVs and 2004-2006 model GX 470 SUVs.
The affected airbags deploy from the roof when the vehicle is struck from the side. Toyota says a programming flaw could trigger them unnecessarily shortly after vehicle startup. Seatbelt pretensioners also could be activated.
Dealers will replace the airbag control module with a new unit using improved programming, according to the company.
Toyota tells Automotive News the defective control units were supplied by Denso Corp. The campaign is unrelated to recalls by Toyota and other carmakers to replace potentially explosive Takata Corp. airbag inflators used in frontal airbags.
