Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling 187,600 late-model vehicles, most of them in North America, to update software that could shut off the airbags.
The campaign targets 2018-2019 model Tundra large pickup trucks, Sequoia large SUVs and Avalon large sedans. Toyota says the airbag system’s controller was incorrectly programmed, thereby causing it to falsely detect a system problem when the engine starts.
The flaw could prevent the front and/or side airbags from deploying in a crash. Toyota says the recall will begin later this month.
