Toyota Motor Corp. has selected eight dealerships four in metro Los Angeles and four in metro San Francisco to sell its Mirai hydrogen-powered sedan.

The electric car, which generates power with a fuel cell that chemically combines hydrogen and oxygen, went on sale in Japan in December. The $57,500 car will debut in the U.S. later this year. Toyota hopes to sell about 3,000 units in the American market by the end of 2017.

The U.S. has only a handful of publicly accessible hydrogen refueling stations, most of them in California. The Mirai is powered by an electric motor and a 114-kW fuel cell. Toyota estimates the 4,100-lb car can travel about 435 miles per fill-up.
