Toyota Motor Corp. estimates that earthquake-related disruptions to its supply chain in Japan cut about 80,000 units of production this spring.
The quakes, which have killed at least 42 people, hit on April 14 and 16. The head of Toyota’s China operations tells Automotive News the company has not yet determined when it will be able to recoup the lost output, which includes as many as 4,000 vehicles for China.
The disruption is likely to impact many markets, because Toyota exports more than 40% of its Japanese output. Most of the company’s plants will resume operations over the next four days. But Toyota has not yet determined when it will reopen two Lexus luxury vehicle factories near the quake zone.
