Toyota Motor Corp. unveiled its completely redesigned HiLux pickup truck on Thursday in Bangkok.

Toyota says the eighth-generation model is 10% more fuel efficient than the current HiLux. The truck is being produced in Thailand for the local market and others in Asia and the Middle East. One media report speculates the truck could replace the Tacoma pickup in the U.S.

The midsize HiLux will retail in Thailand for about 569,000 baht ($17,000). The new truck is slightly longer, wider and lower than its predecessor. Toyota says the revamped model offers big improvements in occupant comfort and fuel efficiency.

The Thai model debuts a new 2.8-liter diesel engine that makes 177 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque). Three more engines will be offered in some markets: a 2.4-liter diesel (160 hp and 295 lb-ft), 2.7-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine (164 hp) and a 4.0-liter 6-cylinder gasoline engine (278 hp).

Refinements include LED headlamps, a more carlike cockpit, optional leather seats and a touchscreen control panel.
