Toyota Motor Corp. intends to raise its global sales goal for 2012 by 220,000 units to 8.80 million vehicles (excluding its Daihatsu and Hino units), compared with 7.09 million vehicles last year, according to Yomiuri Shimbun.
The newspaper, which doesn't cite its sources, says the improved outlook reflects solid sales in emerging markets, especially in Asia. The company tells Bloomberg it has been "closely scrutinizing" worldwide sales figures and will announce a revision soon.
The reported increase would boost the Toyota group sales target, including Daihatsu and Hino, to at least 9.80 million vehicles. The group sold a record 9.37 million units in 2007 and 7.95 million units last year. Sales in the first six months of 2012 grew 34% to 4.97 million units.
Separately, Kyodo News reports that Toyota also plans to raise its worldwide production target for this year, which is currently set at 8.65 million units.
The company is scheduled to report quarterly earnings on Friday.
