Toyota Looks to Expand Sporty TRD and AWD Variants

Toyota Motor Corp. may add all-wheel-drive and TRD performance variants across its U.S. lineup.

If feasible, the company should offer TRD versions on “every car, SUV and truck,” Jack Hollis, who heads Toyota North America’s namesake division, tells AutoGuide. He hints that the all-new Corolla small car might be the next model to get the treatment, noting that there’s “intention and development” but no approval yet for such a model.

The carmaker recently introduced TRD versions of its Camry and Avalon sedans that feature body kits and performance enhancements such as chassis reinforcements and upgraded shock absorbers. Toyota’s TRD Pro Trucks lineup includes the Tacoma SUV and 4Runner and Tundra pickup truck.

Hollis says Toyota also plans to add awd to most future models. The initiative starts with an awd version of the Prius hybrid sedan (right) that was unveiled this week at the Los Angeles auto show.
