Toyota Motor Corp. says it sold 1.52 million electrified vehicles worldwide last year, up 8% over 2016 levels and surpassing a 1.5 million milestone three years ahead of previous plans.
The carmaker set the original 2020 target in October 2015. Under its revised 2050 plan announced late last year, Toyota aims to sell 5.5 million electrified vehicles per year by 2030.
Toyota says it has now sold nearly 11.5 million hybrid, fuel cell-powered and full-electric vehicles since launching the Prius in 1997. The company now offers more than three dozen electrified models worldwide.
Last year the various Prius variants accounted for 27% of Toyota’s deliveries of electrified vehicles. Japan was the carmaker’s largest market for such models, with sales of 658,000 units. This was followed by Europe (392,000 units) and North America (246,000).
Toyota plans to launch 10 new EVs by 2020 and offer electrified versions of all its vehicles by 2025.
