Toyota Motor Corp. says it has produced 25 million cars and light trucks in North America since opening its first factory in the region in 1984.

The milestone vehicle was a hybrid version of the new Avalon fullsize sedan that rolled off the line at the company's Georgetown, Ky., manufacturing complex on Tuesday.

Toyota's production total includes 9.2 million vehicles built at the Kentucky plant, 5.8 million units in Fremont, Calif., 5 million units at a cluster of facilities in Canada and 3.2 million units in Princeton, Ind.

The company's first North American cars were made at the Fremont factory, a joint venture with General Motors Co. Toyota closed the facility in 2010 and sold it to Tesla Motors Inc.

Toyota currently produces 12 models in North America at seven assembly plants, including one in Mexico and a Subaru factory in Indiana that builds the Toyota Camry midsize sedan.
