Toyota Motor Corp. fortified its position as the world's highest-volume carmaker in October by outselling second-place Volkswagen AG 860,000 units to 831,300, according to company reports.

It was the fourth consecutive month in which Toyota’s group sales, which include the company’s Daihatsu and Hino affiliates, surpassed VW and its group brands.

VW led Toyota in the first half of 2015 with group sales of 5.04 million units compared with 5.02 million for Toyota group. But the Japanese carmaker has been outperforming VW since then. Toyota regained the lead in September by a margin of 60,000 units.

For January-October, Toyota and VW sold 8.35 million vehicles and 8.26 million vehicles, respectively.
